Burgemeester Opening Paasworsteltoernoei De Halter
Toespraak burgemeester Jan van Zanen
Utrecht, Sporthal Galgenwaard, 31 maart 2018
Dear friends, dear fans of wrestling from wherever you come,
Welcome to the Netherlands, welcome to the heart of the Netherlands, the very heart of the Netherlands, the sporting City of Utrecht.
Welcome to the Easter Wrestling Tournament. I am delighted that so many of you have chosen to attend. Together with your teammates. Coaches. Supporters. The Easter Wrestling Tournament is an exceptional event. A tournament with a rich history. This is actually the forty-eighth edition. Easter cannot go without this tournament - for almost half a century, De Halter Wrestling Club - from Dichterswijk - has drawn the very best young wrestlers to Utrecht around Eastertime. Once just a six-team tournament. The event was first held in 1970, attracting wrestlers from four countries. However, it has since grown into a highly prominent European wrestling tournament. My congratulations to the club.
Please give the organisers, the trainers, supporters, coffee and lottery ladies, referees, media representatives, all those voluntaries, a warm round of applause.
Attracting over 800 participants. From 21 countries. From all corners of the globe. I am a big sports fan. And, as the Mayor, it pleases me greatly, whenever my city hosts a major sports event.
Above all, however, I sincerely hope that you will all greatly enjoy yourselves throughout this tournament. And this also applies to those attending the training camp after the tournament. I also trust that you will reflect highly fondly on this Easter in Utrecht. And will therefore all return next year, to the absolute Mecca of wrestling. Is everyone ready for it? If so, then let’s get things started. I declare the forty-eighth Easter Wrestling Tournament officially opened. Let the games begin.
