City of Utrecht Cycling tips and tricks for new students
The greatest and fastest way to explore Utrecht is by bicycle.
Buying a bicycle
You can buy a second-hand bicycle for prices from 60 euros. Go and have a look at one of the bicycle shops in Utrecht.
Parking your bicycle
If you want to park your bicycle in the city centre, you will be interested to hear that there are many bicycle lock-ups available: dry, secure and free of charge. The ‘P-route Bicycle’ guides cyclists to free parking places by means of digital signs along the bicycle paths. Check this overview of all manned and monitored bicycle parking's. Or download the app ‘Fietsen stallen’ (iOS and Android).
When you park your bicycle in the street, make sure you park it in a bicycle stand or a marked bicycle parking area. Bicycles parked in a way that they pose a danger or bicycles parked at the same spot for a very long time will be removed by the city of Utrecht. Parking is prohibited at the Drift (near the University Library). If you do park your bicycle here, chances are that it will be removed. You can collect it at the bicycle depot, Kanaalweg 50, but only after you have paid. Do not forget to bring your proof of identity and your bicycle key. If you think your bicycle has been stolen, report the theft to the police, by dialling 0900-8844.
How to get to Utrecht Science Park/De Uithof by bicycle?
If you want to go from the city centre to De Uithof, you go by bicycle of course. But which route do you use? The busy route via Vredenburg, or do you take the ‘Heren Route’ – via Herenstraat, Lepelenburg and Wilhelminapark to De Uithof? Just as quick but a lot more quiet.
Moving your belongings
Rent an electric carrier tricycle or a bicycle trailer at the Service Bicycle Parking in Zadelstraat, Mariaplaats 2. Here you can also repair your bicycle yourself (for free).
